Live Report

  • 10:09 AM: Good Morning everyone and welcome to day 3 of the World Memory Championship 2009 in London.
  • 10:09 AM: The competition is already running and we are now in the middle of the recall period of the Random Words event.
  • 10:10 AM: I will give you the fresh results of the Hour Cards event in a minute.
  • 10:12 AM: 15 minutes remaining.
  • 10:18 AM: The results of the Hour Cards are up.
  • 10:23 AM: 1 – Ben Pridmore – 1144
    2 – Simon Reinhard – 1040
    3 – Dr. Gunther Karsten – 939
    4 – Cornelia Beddies - 896
    5 – Su Ruiqiao – 893
  • 10:24 AM: With this result we have Johannes leading the competition closely before Ben. Third is Gunther with less than 400 points behind Ben.
  • 10:27 AM: 1 minute remaining…
  • 10:27 AM: And it’s over.
  • 10:50 AM: I was just talking to a couple of the competitors I haven’t spoken to so far.
  • 10:50 AM: There are really a lot of them here. :)
  • 10:50 AM: We are preparing no the Spoken Numbers.
  • 10:50 AM: We just listened to a demo speaking of the numbers.
  • 10:51 AM: Henry – Good morning. We have an exciting day ahead…
  • 10:52 AM: The recall sheets are handed out beforehand and placed on the floor.
  • 10:53 AM: I will go now to the front and shoot a video of the first attempt. Make some comments who you would like me to film in attempt 2.
  • 10:56 AM: Henry – How many new World Records have been set this year so far? I note two: Gunther in Abstract Images and Su Ruiqiao in One Hour Numbers. Any others?
  • 10:57 AM: Yes, Dorothea Seitz broke the Junior II record in Abstract Images. Johannes Mallow broke the record in Historic Dates with 118 dates.
  • 10:57 AM: I am certain that there are other new Junior I + II records but we haven’t really checked that yet.
  • 10:57 AM: Henry – Have you interviewed Dominic this year? It would be interesting to hear who the standard of memory in competition has changed over the years. I think when he started that three decks of cards was seen like a super-human feat, and look where we are now! It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on how standards have improved and what he thinks the next milestones in memory are.
  • 10:58 AM: Good idea Henry. I always wanted to make an interview with him but since he is very busy with arbiting it wasn’t so easy to get him in front of the camera. Maybe later today.
  • 11:01 AM: The first attempt is over.
  • 11:01 AM: Henry – This page on WMC.com does not reflect Johannes’ Historic date record: www.worldmemorychampionships.com and Dorothea’s record is not acknowledged here: www.worldmemorychampionships.com Florian, can you nudge however looks after these pages?
  • 11:02 AM: Chris Day is updating the official website. I talk to him about it.
  • 11:28 AM: People are still waiting for their results. I heard rumors about several people doing a perfect 100 like Boris and Wang.
  • 11:29 AM: Here are the results.
  • 11:29 AM: Joint 9 – 28 digits – Ron White & Ameel Hoque
  • 11:29 AM: 8 – 32 digits – Are Risa

  • 11:40 AM: I’ll go to the front filming.
  • 11:47 AM: Steffen – Hi Florian, I’m just back again from work. Doro really had much luck at hour cards regarding Christians very low results. What about her first try spoken numbers? Steffen
  • 11:48 AM: Doro got only 4 digits in her first attempt.
  • 11:50 AM: Gosh I was just using my tripod for filming and I am very angry about its poor quality. It is making mad sounds when moving. This is not hearable for the competitors but it will ceratinly be on the video.
  • 11:51 AM: dorobabba – I hope Doro’s second attempt will work better!
  • 11:52 AM: I shouldn’t have been so cheap with my tripod. It was only 20 Euros. A good one costs hundreds of Euros…
  • 11:52 AM: Sorry for my complainings :)
  • 11:55 AM: One minute recall remaining.
  • 11:56 AM: And they’re done!
  • 12:06 PM: Anonymous – thx, it’s great to hyve you there!

  • 12:21 PM: Simon Orton – Hey Florian, great coverage of the WMC! How is the technology for the Spoken Numbers this year? Are there multiple languages or is it all in English?
  • 12:22 PM: Hi, it is all in English
  • 12:22 PM: But the quality is good.

  • 12:38 PM: They did it. Memorization of the 300 digits is over. The 15 minutes of recall time have started.
  • 12:49 PM: 5 Minutes remaining.
  • 12:49 PM: dorobabba – Do you know what is Doro’s result from the second attempt?
  • 12:49 PM: Dorothea got 35 in her second attempt.
  • 12:52 PM: And the recall is over.
  • 12:55 PM: Doro just told me that she got 60 in her third attempt and she is happy about it.
  • 12:56 PM: dorobabba – Thanks,I think thats enough for Doro. Are there any results og random words?
  • 1:00 PM: Steffen – Great :-))) Btw, I just wonder, which is the actual junior world record at Names/Faces. Do you have any ideas? I only found Joachim Thaler (168) at WMC 2006 and Astrid Plessl (151) during WMC 2003. But don’t know whether they were juniors at that time? Steffen
  • 1:01 PM: No sorry, I don’t't. But it should stand on Memocamp.com under the N&F

  • 1:48 PM: k.nikhilein Schnappschuss..please

  • 1:48 PM: Steffen – Hi, I have just checked the world ranking at names/faces. Joachim Thaler (168 in 2006) was born in 1987, Astrid Plessl (151 in 2003) was born in 1984. All other people with more than 150 point definitely were adults. So the 150 of Doro seems to be a new Junior world record! Steffen
  • 1:48 PM: Sorry I was away getting myself some food.

  • 2:21 PM: Caeles – Hannes is going to do it!!!!
  • 2:21 PM: Johannes record in Speed Cards is 59.65 sconds

  • 2:26 PM: Caeles – he can do it under 40, too!!
  • 2:26 PM: Tom – The lower the better for Ben. He has to win by 25 seconds if he does 35 seconds but only by 11 seconds if he does 25.
